ABOUT THE PROJECT

One of the many projects where being ahead of the curve meant adjusting our delivery. Initially sold as a VR experience the Battleship Experience would take you on board of the destroyer USS John Paul Jones where you could fully explore the ship from aft to bow, after completing the proof of concept it was decided to move away from full VR to a simulated experience using your tablet due to the low penetration of VR headsets at the time.

THE EXPERIENCE

The app would feature the ability to literally walk the entire length of the ship – a feature later replaced with a static 360 degree view, as it proved difficult to provide 505 feet (168 yards, the length of the ship) of walking space. Exploring the ship would grant you access to unique content that you could share to your social networks.

Each section of the ship was treated as a chapter each with secrets and exclusive content. All of the content for the site had to be modeled and created by our team to be able to render it in real time.

EXPLORING THE SECTIONS

Inside each section you could explore to learn facts about the ship; all displayed in AR style to give you the sense that you were really standing on the ship. You also could also move the  camera using touch gestures or use the gyroscope to "free look".

To encourage completion of the experience we added badges and additional rewards for fully exploring a chapter. Overall there were over 60 pieces of unique content from photos, videos, interviews an even some hints about the aliens in the movie.
