ABOUT THE PROJECT

My first released project while working at PlayStation! The DualShock back button attachment designed by the first-party accessories team, came to us for UX support. Their product was progressing nicely and they wanted to further improving the UX. They had some ideas but wanted to see if it could be further improved and if there was a way to make it easier to programming the device. The team also had some demanding needs on timing as well as technical and manufacturing constraints.

Small Space, Big Challenge

The device featured a very small high quality OLED screen with active pixels dimensions of 128x32px. Our team had never worked on such a limited space but we were certainly up for the challenge. In addition we needed to define how to map the buttons and manage 3 different profiles. You can see the video above for details on the functionality.

Great Reception

The product was very well received of course and it got frequent praise for how easy it was to set up, modify and switch profiles. So not only the interaction model but the small touches with the transitions and the style and precision of the renderings to make them acceptable in such a small space contributed greatly to the high quality feel of the product.
